Standing Stones at Windhill

This Bronze Age standing stone is one of three at Windhill, off the A862 road, halfway between Muir of Ord and Beauly. Two stones (including this one) stand on the east side of the road and there is a third on the west side.

Other features which have been identified in the surrounding area include an enclosure, a ring-ditch, crop marks and a cist containing a burial.

The stone stands at a height of 2.3 metres while its neighbour is only 0.5 metres. The stone across the road is 1.7 metres high.

Standing stones constitute an important element in Scotland's heritage. The great labour involved in erecting them points to something more than simply art or fancy. Examples like this one, as opposed to stone circles or henge monuments, often occur in conjunction with a cairn and are occasionally engraved with cup-and-ring marks.
