Resolis Parish Church

Originally built in 1767 to serve the parishioners of Resolis, this church was rebuilt in 1830. It was at this time that the tall windows were installed and a gallery added. This was during the ministry of the Reverend Donald Sage, one of the many ministers who left the Established Church at the time of the Disruption of 1843.

The Church of Scotland suffered its greatest division during this turbulent period in its history. Perhaps it is hard today to understand the full effect that the Church had over society at this time. We must remember that the 19 th century was the most active period of church-going in Scotland, with a great deal of parish activity.

The longstanding discontent within the Church was over patronage – who had rights to interfere in the running of the Church. It came to a head on 18 May 1843, when under the leadership of Thomas Chalmers, 470 ministers (about one third) quit the Established Church and set up the new Free Church of Scotland – a Church free from civil interference. The Reverend Donald Sage was one of these ministers and indeed, the Black Isle was one of the strongest Free Church areas.
