Black Isle Railway Embankment

This railway embankment is a remnant of the old Black Isle Railway line. It offers splendid views over Munlochy Bay, a haven for a huge variety of wading and migratory birds.

The Black Isle Railway line ran from Muir of Ord to Fortrose and was part of the Highland Railway network. It carried passengers from 1894 until 1951.

Although nothing remains of the station at Fortrose you can still see one of the original stations at Redcastle on the south side of the Black Isle. There were also stations at Allangrange, Munlochy and Avoch but these have all been demolished in the course of new building work.

The railway altered the lives of the people of the Black Isle, offering a clean, fast, sometimes chilly (there was no heating!) ride into Muir of Ord, or on to Inverness. If a young person was going off to college or university, the whole village would turn out at the station to see him or her off, with the local minister giving a prayer and blessing on the platform.
