The name, "The Black Isle"
There have long been disputes about where the name the 'Black Isle' or in Gaelic Eilean Dubh, originates. Common theories include that during dark winter days when all the surrounding hills are covered in a
blanket of snow, the low lying Black Isle would stand out dark, in contrast. Or is it a link to its ancient past – the name St. Duthac is associated with many places on the Black Isle, perhaps Eilean Dubh
refers to Duthac's Isle? Alternatively, Hugh Miller referred to the high area around Millbuie Ridge as bleak, black and dark. Try our placenames quiz - just click |
