Kilmuir Wester Burial Ground

This church and burial ground lie in what was once the centre of the original parish of Kilmuir Wester, on the shores on the Moray Firth, not far from the Kessock Bridge. The church and the village of Kilmuir can be reached either by forestry tracks or by taking the long, winding, narrow road just off the A9, opposite the turn off for North Kessock.

Originally dedicated to St Mary, the church was probably erected in the 15th century but was abandoned in 1762, shortly after the parish of Kilmuir Wester joined with Suddie to form the parish of Knockbain. It lies in a peaceful, sheltered spot to the west of Kilmuir village.

The northeast and southwest gables of the church remain virtually intact. The burial ground contains some interesting gravestones and a burial vault for the Grahams of Drynie was incorporated into the chancel at the east end of the church ruins, sometime in the 19th century.
