Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Course
'picturesquely situated on the shores of the Moray Firth, which from its romantic position possesses many charms for the tourist and pleasure seeker, while its salubrious climate should attract those desirous of imparting
the ruddy glow of health to the pallid cheek.' Almost 120 years later, the sentiments still apply. Each year, many visitors come to Fortrose to relax and take in the
sea air. Many are attracted by the sense of heritage and history and head for areas like the Cathedral Precinct or the wonderful carved Pictish stones at the Groam House Museum in Rosemarkie. The golf course at Chanonry Ness is very popular. The club's history goes back to September 1888, the date of its first official meeting. A 6 hole course was opened the following year and competitions were introduced the year after that. By 1924 the course was the full 18 holes. The original clubhouse of 1895 has been extended, replaced, and replaced again, as membership continued to outgrow its facilities. The most recent extension, with bar, was completed in 1977.
Today the club welcomes visitors. The course has been described both as 'a gem' and 'perhaps the brightest jewel in the Highlands golfing crown'. |
