Cullicudden Old Burial Ground The church was built as a successor to the earlier medieval church of St Martin at the foot of Drumdyre. It
continued in use after the union of Cullicudden and Kirkmichael parishes in 1662 but when a new church was built at Resolis in 1767, Cullicudden was allowed to fall into decay.
The masonry on the south-western wall of the church is of a poorer quality than that of the original south-eastern wall which suggests it may be later in date. Beyond this wall is a collection of 18th
century graveslabs which suggest the church may have originally extended another 12 metres to the southwest. The churchyard contains burial enclosures of the Gordons and the Urquharts. There is also a
stone carved with a chalice and a pierced hand. It is unusual to find such surviving evidence of Roman Catholic symbolism. |
