The web-site - a democratic approach for community web-sites

This web-site has been developed using the HBNgine web-site tool-kit, developed by Highland Business Networks Ltd in conjunction with Lambda Research and Consultancy Ltd. The tool-kit offers facilities for on-line directories, discussion forums, reference libraries, on-line shopping and user-maintainable content, and is available as an "instant dynamic transactional website"..The design for the toolkit was developed by Lambda Research and Consultancy Ltd under funding provided by the Scottish Executive, to research the needs for community websites for rural areas of Scotland. This research has now resulted in the nationel rural gateway site, and in several local rural community websites, of which this is one.

Other sites include:

Highland Ring website, www.ringonline.org , serving several communities throughout the Highlands and Islands

Avoch website, www.avoch.org, providing a heritage forum for the fishing village of Avoch

Argyll and Bute Volunteers website, providing a forum for volunteers in the Argyll and Bute area

Highland Business Women's website, providing a site for business women througout the Highlands

The principle on which all the above web-sites have been created is that the sites should be capable of being developed and maintained by the people and communities who use them - so that, for example, designated users can add items to the library, add or amend items in the diary section, or add and amend the pages and content of the site - all without any expertise in web-site design or construction.
