Avoch to Fortrose Railway Walk

You can trace part of the old Black Isle Railway line by talking this attractive walk from behind the Old Parish Church at Avoch through to Fortrose. It can sometimes be a bit muddy but the views are well worth it. You can return the same way or carry on down through Fortrose to the lighthouse at Chanonry Point where you may be lucky enough to see some bottlenose dolphins.

As you walk along the old track it is obvious the line has not been used for some time. Indeed it is over forty years since a freight train last took this route and over fifty since a passenger travelled the line. In its heyday, however, the line provided a vital link to Muir of Ord, Dingwall and Inverness. In the years leading up to its closure, there were many rumours about the passenger trains being stopped. They could not compete with the cars and buses and it was no great surprise when the line finally closed.
